Many today are using “Cloud” servers or other types of public web services to store photos and documents, despite the mounting privacy and security concerns over Apple and Google spying on their customers. With the proliferation of smart phones integrated with powerful cameras, Users are taking lots of photos and video; uploading them to the internet and storing these files on public servers.
An NBC Newscast reports that photos taken with a smart phone are “geo-tagged;” embedding the location information of where the photo was taken. When the User uploads the smart phone photos to a public server, the geo-tagged photo information is viewable to anyone who knows how to. And it is easy.
Images on Facebook, Photobucket, and elsewhere taken with a smart phone are potentially serious security risks for any person or family. Stalkers, pedophiles and other miscreants can actually track down the location of a photo and by extension a family’s location, where a child goes to school, etc. Cross reference that information with other public databases and you and your family are suddenly exposed for all the bad guys to see. The risk is enormous in what appears to be yet another surprising unintended consequence to storing information in “The Cloud.”
